What I Do With Your Email Address

Last updated Tuesday, October 6, 2026

This is what happens to your email address after you hand it over, in plain English.

Never sold, never rented

Your email address is never sold, rented, or traded. Sponsors never get it either. They buy space in the newsletter.

What I collect

When you subscribe, I get your email address. Beehiiv, the company that hosts the list and the website and sends the newsletter, also records where you signed up from (a Facebook ad, a friend's referral link, the website) and a rough location, meaning city, state, and country. Beehiiv's own policy is at beehiiv.com/privacy.

Opens and clicks

Beehiiv records, per subscriber, whether you opened an issue and what you clicked. I use that two ways. The totals tell me what readers want more of, and they're the numbers I give sponsors. Sponsors get totals, never names or addresses. The per-address record also shows me who hasn't opened in months. Those addresses get one email asking if they still want the newsletter, and if there's no answer, I remove them.

The Meta pixel

hogbackpost.com runs a Meta pixel (Meta owns Facebook and Instagram). It uses a cookie in your browser to tell Meta when you visit hogbackpost.com. It doesn't send the full address of each page, but it does send codes that let Meta tell which pages you looked at.

Signing up on hogbackpost.com, however you got here (a Facebook ad, a forwarded issue, a search), sends Meta a "Subscribe" event. Meta doesn't get your email address as text. It gets a coded version of it. If your Facebook or Instagram account uses the same address, Meta can match the two, which is how I learn which of my ads bring in readers. Meta's privacy policy covers what it does with that. A signup on some other newsletter's site doesn't go through my pixel.

Other newsletters

After you sign up, the site suggests a few other Colorado newsletters, each with a Subscribe button, plus Subscribe to all and Skip. Click one, or Subscribe to all, and Beehiiv signs you up there with the same email address, so that newsletter gets your address because you asked. Click Skip and nothing is shared.

Referrals

Share your referral link and Beehiiv counts the signups. The sticker reward comes with an email asking for a mailing address, used to mail the sticker and nothing else.

Surveys, comments, and replies

Survey answers, including the unsubscribe survey, are saved with your email address. I may quote a survey answer without your name. Comments on an issue on the website are public.

Replies to the newsletter come to me. I might quote what you wrote, in the newsletter, on the website, in a social post, or in my advertising materials, without your name and with at most a neighborhood. I don't print your name without asking first. If you wrote to me about your own business or event, I may name you as the source.

Payments

Sponsors and classified buyers pay through Stripe, and I never see the card number. Stripe's policy is at stripe.com/privacy.

Leaving

Every email has an unsubscribe link at the bottom. Unsubscribing stops the emails. If you'd rather be off my list entirely, email [email protected] and I'll delete you from the Hogback Post list. Beehiiv may keep its own copy, and for anything Beehiiv itself holds, write [email protected].
